Visiting Assistant Professor of African Art History

The Art History Division at the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks a full-time, visiting assistant professor in African Art History for the Fall 2010 term. Responsibilities will be to teach two undergraduate courses for the fall term, ARTH 113, Introduction to African Art, and ARTH 310, African Art and Society I. ARTH 113 requires lecturing three times per week, and supervising 3 Graduate Teaching Assistants who teach weekly section meetings. ARTH 310 requires 3 lectures per week. Fall semester begins on Aug. 23; instruction ends Dec 8, and final exams end Dec 17.
A PhD is preferred, ABD is also acceptable, with specialization in African art history. Preference will be given to candidates with teaching experience.
Salary is $20,000. Cost of living in Champaign-Urbana is affordable with rents for one-bedroom apartments ranging from $500 to $800 per month. Although a car is recommended, the local bus service is easily accessible and free for employees on campus. Access to ZipCar service downtown and on campus is also available.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign School of Art + Design is situated within a comprehensive College of Fine and Applied Arts. The equipment check-out window offers an extensive inventory of digital production equipment and the labs maintain a three-dimensional printer, a laser cutter as well as a host of high-end ink jet plotters.
The Ricker Library is one of the largest art libraries in the nation with a collection of more than 60,000 books, 34,000 mounted photographs, and 150,000 slides. Over 80,000 additional volumes on architecture, art and design are available among the 7 million plus volumes, as well as 80,000 serial subscriptions in the Main Library stacks and other campus libraries.
The Krannert Art Museum is adjacent to the Art + Design building and boasts an archive of over 8,000 works of art and houses rotating exhibitions of traditional and innovative art works. The museum’s permanent holdings include the Tree’s Collection of European and American Painting, the Moore Collection of European and Decorative Arts, the Olsen Collection of Pre-Columbian Art, and smaller collections of 20th Century Art, Asian Art and African Art. Each spring the museum hosts group BFA and MFA exhibitions for graduating students.
Other facilities include the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, which has been dubbed by the New York Times “the Lincoln Center of the Midwest” with an extensive program of theater, dance and music, and Japan House, a center for the study of Japanese arts and culture set amidst the gardens and waters of the University Arboretum.
