CALL FOR CONFERENCE PARTICIPATION

Greetings NCAA Members!

We are excited to gather once again at the 2023 NCAA Conference hosted by the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and invite you to be a part of the program. This year we will kick off our program with the ever popular Ignite Sessions followed by the Case Studies in which we trouble shoot real life problems and potential solutions.

We hope you will consider participating. Brief details about each opportunity are following. Greater information about each opportunity is attached.

1. IGNITE PRESENTATIONS

TIMING: The session is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, September 27, 2023. Each ignite will be presented in approximately a 10-minute time block. Interested members should express intent and send a brief bio by August 1, 2023 to Elissa Armstrong ([email protected]), Sarah Meyer ([email protected]) and O. Gustavo Plascencia ([email protected]).  Further instructions will follow once interest is expressed and the precise timing and number of presenters may be adjusted before September.

IGNITE DESCRIPTION + TOPIC: Stepping Up …and Stepping Out

As we approach the milestone of NCAA’s 50th gathering we take the opportunity to look inward, to self-assess, and to plan for the future generations of NCAA art administrators and educators. Stepping Up and Stepping Outfrom our usual modus operandi is necessary to continue to create an environment where everyone can flourish.

NCAA seeks stories and examples of practical and innovative strategies to ground ourselves through long-term goals while helping us to address the short-term challenges we encounter in our day-to-day operations. Our Ignite panel will center itself around thoughtful examples of and discussion about what we might do better, how arts administration has or should change, and if arts administration might make us more effective communicators and societal leaders.

Please feel free to interpret this theme broadly. You may wish to share your thoughts about an idea or project, provide insights that include the good and the bad, or perhaps you might want to present a speculative idea not yet implemented. We are, of course, available to assist and support in developing a topic.

2. CASE STUDIES

TIMING: The case studies are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, September 27, 2021 following the Ignites. Each case study will be presented, and discussion completed in a 20-30-minute time block. Interested members should express intent and send a brief bio (one or two sentences) by August 1, 2023 to Elissa Armstrong ([email protected]), Sarah Meyer ([email protected]) and O. Gustavo Plascencia ([email protected]). You may outline your proposal, or send an actual case study, in 350 words or fewer. Detailed instructions will follow once interest is expressed and the precise timing and number of presenters may be adjusted before September.

CASE STUDIES + TOPIC

True to life examples of tough problems in administration are presented as a Case Study with structured questions, for small groups to discuss and resolve. If you have a tough problem or unique experience in arts administration and academic leadership, consider developing a case study. Topics might include, but are not limited to:

  • Leadership and Management
  • Interpersonal Communication
  • Succeeding with External Constituencies
  • Budget Management
  • Personnel Evaluation
  • Issues Related to Promotion and Tenure
  • Personal Growth
  • Career Paths
  • Any topical area related to arts administration and leadership
